TuGo Visitors to Canada insurance: for Super Visa and older visitors

No age limit on the Comprehensive plan, stability periods that step up with age, and a 7-day option for recently changed conditions.

TuGo comes up most often when a family calls about a parent in their 80s, or one whose blood-pressure pills were changed last month. Those are the two cases where its plan is different from most others. For a healthy 60-year-old, it is one good option among several, and price usually decides.

Super Visa refunds and cancellations

What happens to the premium if plans change.

1

Visa refused

Full refund if the Super Visa is refused or the visitor is denied entry to Canada. Keep the refusal letter.

2

Cancelled before travel

Refund less a $250 fee if you cancel for any other reason before the coverage starts.

3

Time limit

Ask for the refund within 90 days after the policy's expiry date. After travel starts, the wording and any claims decide.

Before you buy TuGo

Start date. Coverage can start when the visitor leaves home, if the journey to Canada takes 48 hours or less, on the arrival date, or later. For a Super Visa, match it to the planned arrival.

Side trips. Trips outside Canada are covered as long as most of the policy period is spent in Canada. A visit back to the home country is allowed but not covered.

The deductible. It applies to each person and each incident, so two hospital visits for unrelated problems mean two deductibles.

The questionnaire. Inaccurate answers to the rate questions can add a $15,000 deductible to a claim. Go through it with prescriptions in hand.

Claims. Call Claims at TuGo before going to hospital whenever possible. Our TuGo claims guide covers the steps and documents.

TuGo questions families ask

Who is TuGo?

TuGo is the trade name of North American Air Travel Insurance Agents Ltd., a Canadian travel insurance company that designs and administers the Visitors to Canada plan.

Claims and 24-hour emergency help are handled by OneWorld Assist, which TuGo calls Claims at TuGo. If you need to file a claim, see our TuGo claims guide.

Is there an age limit on TuGo Visitors to Canada insurance?

Not on the Comprehensive plan. The Basic plan is for visitors up to age 79.

That is why families often look at TuGo for parents in their 80s. Older applicants answer a medical questionnaire, and premiums rise with age.

How long must a condition be stable with TuGo?

90 days to age 59, 120 days at 60 to 69, 180 days at 70 to 85 and 365 days from age 86.

Stable means no new symptoms, no new or changed medication or dose, no new diagnosis, no hospital stay and no tests or referrals pending in that period. The full definition is in the policy wording.

What is TuGo's unstable pre-existing condition option?

An optional add-on that covers a condition stable for just 7 days before coverage starts. It is available up to age 79.

It costs extra and has its own limits, so ask Pankaj to quote it side by side with the standard plan before you buy.

Does TuGo meet Super Visa requirements?

Yes, when you buy 365 days of coverage with at least $100,000 from a Canadian insurer, paid in full or in instalments with a deposit.

IRCC also asks that the policy cover health care, hospitalization and repatriation.

Can I get a refund on a TuGo Super Visa policy?

Yes. If the visa is refused or entry to Canada is denied, the premium is refunded in full. If you cancel before travel for another reason, a $250 fee applies.

Refund requests must be made within 90 days after the policy expiry date. Refunds after travel has started depend on the policy wording and any claims made.

When can TuGo coverage start?

On the day your visitor leaves home if the trip to Canada takes 48 hours or less, on the arrival date, or any later date.

Buying before arrival avoids waiting periods for sickness that apply when coverage is bought after the visitor is already in Canada.

What happens if the medical questionnaire is wrong?

TuGo can apply an extra $15,000 deductible to claims if rate questions were answered inaccurately, and an undisclosed condition can lead to a refused claim.

Answer with the visitor's prescriptions and medical file in front of you. Pankaj goes through the questions with families before they buy.
