Super Visa insurance refunds: what you get back if the visa is refused or your parents go home early

Almost every plan refunds a refused visa. The fees, the paperwork and the no-claim rule are where plans differ.

Families buy Super Visa insurance before IRCC decides the application, so the first refund question comes early: what if the visa is refused? The second comes later, when a parent decides to fly home after seven or eight months. Both have answers in the policy wording, and they are not the same from one insurer to the next.

In short

If the Super Visa is refused, most insurers refund the premium in full when the refusal letter reaches them before the policy start date. Cancel a visa policy without a refusal letter and fees of $150 to $250 apply on several plans. If your parent goes home early, unused premium is refunded only if there was no claim, less an admin fee of about $25 to $50, with proof of departure sent within 60 or 90 days. Within 10 days of buying, most plans give a full refund if coverage has not started. Monthly setup fees are usually kept once the visa is issued.

The four refund situations

Each one has its own paperwork and its own fees.

Visa refused

Send the IRCC refusal letter before the start date. Usually a full refund; a few plans keep a fee.

Going home early

Unused premium back, less a fee, if there was no claim. Proof of departure needed.

Plans changed

Cancelled before the start date without a refusal letter: fees of $150 to $250 on several plans.

Changed your mind

Within 10 days of buying, a full refund on most plans if coverage has not started.

If the Super Visa is refused

IRCC asks for proof of a paid policy with the application, and a quote is not accepted. So you pay first and wait for the decision. If the answer is no, the premium comes back on almost every plan.

Send the refusal letter quickly. Most insurers want it before the policy's effective date. Travel Shield also asks for it within 60 days of the refusal. GMS is one of the few that refunds after the effective date, as long as your parent never travelled to Canada, minus an admin fee.

Ask about the monthly setup fee. RIMI and 2 Visit Canada refund their $120 setup fee if the visa is refused and the letter arrives before the effective date. Travel Shield refunds its two-month deposit but keeps the $50 processing fee. AwayCare charges $100 plus tax on a refused-visa cancellation.

Moving the start date is often better than cancelling. If IRCC is slow and the visa may still be approved, ask your broker to move the effective date before it arrives. On some plans, including Destination, changes cannot be made once coverage has started.

If your parents go home early

A Super Visa allows a stay of up to 5 years, but many parents go home after a few months. The unused part of the premium can come back, with three conditions.

  1. No claim on the policyNearly every wording refuses a refund once a claim has been made, paid or is pending. Manulife also refuses if the assistance service was used.
  2. Proof of the return dateA boarding pass, e-ticket or passport stamp. The refund runs from the day your parent left Canada, or from the day the insurer gets the request on some monthly plans.
  3. On timeWithin 60 days of returning on Travel Shield; in writing within 60 days on RIMI and TravCare; within 90 days after the policy expires on JF, TuGo and Destination. GMS refuses requests made after the policy expires.

For example, suppose a father's one-year Destination policy cost $2,400 and he flies home after seven months with no claims. About five months, roughly $1,000, is unused; Destination deducts its $25 admin fee from the refund. The insurer does the exact calculation by days.

Unused months on a monthly plan

On a monthly plan you pay a deposit and a setup fee up front, then monthly charges. When your parent goes home early, the charges stop, but not everything comes back. JF keeps its first two months once coverage has started and refunds only full unused months. Travel Shield refunds unused months less $50 and counts a part month as used. Since December 1, 2025, Destination pro-rates monthly plans from the date it receives the request, so ask on the day your parent leaves. Setup fees of $50 to $120 are usually not refunded once the visa is issued. More detail is on our page on Super Visa monthly payment plans.

Questions about Super Visa insurance refunds

Do I get my money back if the Super Visa is refused?

Yes, with nearly every insurer, if you send the IRCC refusal letter before the policy's start date.

Some plans keep a fee even then: AwayCare charges $100 plus tax, and Travel Shield keeps its $50 monthly processing fee. GMS also refunds after the start date if your parent never travelled, minus an admin fee.

What if we cancel before the start date but the visa was not refused?

Expect a fee: $150 on Destination's one-year visa policies, $250 on TuGo, TruStone, MSH Discover Canada and Travel Shield.

Insurers charge this because a Super Visa policy is proof for IRCC. Destination says it may report cancelled visa policies to IRCC.

My mother is going home after 8 months. Can we get a refund?

Usually yes, for the unused period, if there has been no claim, less an admin fee of about $25 to $50.

Send proof of departure, such as the boarding pass or passport stamp, within the insurer's deadline: 60 days after returning on Travel Shield, 90 days after expiry on JF, TuGo and Destination.

Why can't we get a refund after a claim?

Most wordings say no refund is payable once a claim has been paid, is pending, or has been made, even a small one.

TruStone lets you withdraw a claim to get a refund, but charges $200. Weigh a small clinic bill against the refund before you claim.

How do refunds work on a monthly plan?

The monthly charges stop, and unused months may be refunded, but setup fees and some deposits are kept.

JF keeps the first two months once coverage starts and refunds unused full months only. Travel Shield counts part months as used. Destination pro-rates monthly plans from the day it receives the request.

Is there a cooling-off period?

Yes. Most plans give a full refund within 10 days of purchase if coverage has not started and there is no claim.

RIMI, TruStone, TuGo, Destination, Allianz, Manulife, GMS, Travelance and AwayCare all have a 10-day review period.

Is there a minimum refund?

Yes. Several insurers do not pay refunds under $20, and Destination's minimum refund is $25.

TuGo also has a minimum premium that becomes non-refundable once travel has taken place.

How do I ask for a refund?

In writing, through your broker or the insurer, with the policy number, the reason, and proof: the refusal letter, a boarding pass or passport stamp, or proof of provincial coverage.
