Who is eligible?

  • Visitors, workers, students and new immigrants without government health coverage
  • At least 15 days old and less than 90 years old
  • Comprehensive Care requires the applicant to be under age 70
  • Not travelling against medical advice
  • No terminal illness
  • No new or undiagnosed symptoms
  • No assistance required with activities of daily living

Pre-existing conditions and medical history

  • Plan 1 excludes every pre-existing medical condition.
  • Under Plan 2, applicants up to age 74 require 90 days of stability.
  • Applicants age 75–84 require 180 days of stability.
  • Older applicants must satisfy the medical-declaration requirements.
  • A Yes answer can exclude pre-existing-condition coverage.
Medical-history reminder: A new symptom, diagnosis, medication change, treatment change, hospitalization, referral or pending investigation can affect eligibility or stability.

Who completes the medical declaration?

Plan 2 applicants in the older age band must satisfy the policy medical-declaration requirements and answer all questions accurately.

Waiting period and stability guidance

  • A 48-hour sickness waiting period applies when purchased within 30 days after departure from the country of origin.
  • An eight-day sickness waiting period applies when purchased later.
  • Injury during the applicable waiting period may be limited to 50% of eligible expenses.
  • The waiting period may be waived for qualifying continuous TravCare coverage.

Claims and emergency assistance

  • Contact the Assistance Company before treatment.
  • Submit the completed claim form.
  • Provide original itemized bills, prescription receipts and travel evidence.
  • Submit proof within 90 days of service.
Important: Benefits may be limited to 80% of eligible expenses, to a maximum of CAD $25,000, when required notification is not provided.

Refunds and administration fees

  • A full refund may be available before the effective date, less applicable fees.
  • A prorated refund may be considered after early return or government-health-plan eligibility.
  • Requests must generally be submitted in writing within 60 days.
  • No refund is issued when the amount is less than CAD $20.

Important exclusions and limitations

  • Excluded or unstable pre-existing conditions
  • Non-emergency, elective or cosmetic treatment
  • Ongoing and chronic care
  • Treatment in the country of origin
  • Specified hazardous sports and activities
  • Specified pregnancy and childbirth expenses outside Comprehensive Care
  • War, terrorism, illegal acts and substance-related losses
