For families in Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview, Saint John and Quispamsis, Fredericton and Oromocto, and across the province. This page covers what is specific to New Brunswick: why NB Medicare can't cover a visiting parent, what hospitals and Ambulance New Brunswick charge visitors, which date starts the policy when parents connect through Toronto, Montréal or Halifax, and the main hospitals in each city, English and French.

In short, for New Brunswick families

NB Medicare excludes tourists, transients and visitors, and owning a home in the province doesn't change that. Parents on a Super Visa need private insurance: at least $100,000 of emergency cover, valid one year from the day they enter Canada, which is usually the day they land in Toronto or Montréal. Horizon Health says patients who are not Canadian residents pay for all hospital services, doctors' fees are extra, and a ground ambulance costs a visitor $650 plus HST. Why NB Medicare won't cover a visiting parent

New Brunswick's eligibility page answers this directly, and it closes two common hopes.

1

Visitors are excluded

Medicare lists tourists and visitors to the province, and transients, among those who are not eligible. Its definition of a resident "does not include a tourist, transient or visitor to the Province."

2

Owning property doesn't help

The province says owning a home or property in New Brunswick, or paying provincial property or income tax, does not make someone eligible. A parent who co-owns your house is still a visitor.

3

Hospitals bill visitors in full

Horizon Health says patients who are not Canadian residents must pay for all hospital services they receive. Doctors can charge their own fees, which are not part of the hospital bill.

Connecting through Toronto, Montréal or Halifax? Check the start date

Parents from overseas almost always connect before reaching Moncton (YQM), Saint John (YSJ) or Fredericton (YFC). The border officer admits them at the first Canadian airport, and IRCC counts the year of coverage from that date of entry. New Brunswick is an hour ahead of Toronto and Montréal.

What a visitor pays in New Brunswick

Horizon and Vitalité do not post a public per-day rate for non-residents of Canada; the hospital bills after care, and Horizon accepts payment by e-Transfer, online through Service New Brunswick, at the facility or by mail. The province does publish ambulance fees.

Ambulance New BrunswickWithout NB MedicareWith a valid NB Medicare card
Ground emergency call$650.00$130.60
Ground transfer between facilities in NB$650.00$0
Air ambulance$6,500.00$0
Government of New Brunswick. Fees exclude HST unless stated. A visiting parent pays the "without Medicare" rate.

For example, suppose your mother in Riverview has a stroke and is taken by ambulance to The Moncton Hospital, then moved by air to another hospital for specialist care. That is $650 plus $6,500 in ambulance fees alone, plus HST, before any hospital or doctors' bills. IRCC's minimum is $100,000 of coverage, and many families choose more.

Call the insurer's 24/7 line as soon as your parent is safe. It can contact the hospital and arrange payment where possible. Ask it before any planned transfer.

Main hospitals in Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton

New Brunswick has two health networks: Horizon, which works mainly in English, and Vitalité, which works mainly in French. Moncton has one of each, and both networks must serve patients in English and French.

911 first for anything life-threatening. Otherwise call the insurer's line before going in; it can direct your parent to a clinic for minor problems.

Distances, winters and side trips

Distances are real. Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton are each an hour or more apart by road, and smaller towns are further from a large hospital. Ambulance and transfer costs add up quickly, which the fee table shows.

Winter ice is a common cause of falls for older visitors. The deductible usually applies per claim, so compare it as carefully as the premium.

Trips to Nova Scotia, PEI or Québec are in Canada, so the policy covers your parent there. Family in Halifax can read Super Visa insurance in Halifax.

Questions New Brunswick families ask

General questions are in the full Super Visa insurance FAQ.

Can my parents get NB Medicare while visiting?

No. NB Medicare excludes tourists, transients and visitors, and a Super Visa parent is a visitor.

That is why IRCC requires private insurance for parents on a Super Visa, valid at least one year from the date of entry.

My parent co-owns our house in Moncton. Does that make them eligible?

No. New Brunswick says owning a home or property, or paying provincial taxes, does not make someone eligible for Medicare.

Eligibility depends on being a resident with Canadian status, and the definition of resident excludes visitors.

Can an Ontario advisor sell us Super Visa insurance in New Brunswick?

Only if they hold a New Brunswick licence. Pankaj Bhatia is licensed in New Brunswick as well as Ontario and five other provinces.

Families compare and buy online here and get the documents by email for the IRCC application. Questions, refunds and claims are handled by phone, WhatsApp or video call.

My parents fly to Montréal and then on to Moncton. Which date starts the policy?

The day they land in Montréal, where they first enter Canada.

IRCC requires coverage for at least one year from the date of entry. Use the entry-date checker; Moncton is an hour ahead of Montréal.

How much is an ambulance in New Brunswick for a visitor?

$650 for a ground emergency call without a valid NB Medicare card, plus HST, against $130.60 for a New Brunswicker.

Air ambulance is $6,500. Visitor plans usually list ambulance services as covered emergency care; check the policy wording.

Can my parent be treated in English at a Vitalité hospital?

Yes. Both Horizon and Vitalité must provide care to the public in English and French throughout New Brunswick.

That is the finding of the province's Commissioner of Official Languages; a network's internal working language doesn't change the duty. In an emergency, go to the nearest hospital.

Will the hospital bill include the doctor?

No. Horizon says doctors' fees for some services are not part of the hospital fees.

Expect separate bills, and keep each one with the receipts and discharge notes for the claim.

Is Super Visa insurance cheaper in New Brunswick?

No. Insurers price on age, health, coverage and deductible, the same across provinces.

Price tables by age are on the Super Visa insurance cost page, and the live quote above shows current prices.
