For families in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Breslau, Elmira and New Hamburg. Waterloo Region's immigration doubled between 2016 and 2021, and India was the top source. More families are now bringing parents to stay. Here are the Ontario rules that matter, what local hospitals charge visitors, where to go in an emergency, and how to reach a local advisor.

In short, for Kitchener families

OHIP doesn't cover visitors, so a parent on a Super Visa needs private insurance: at least $100,000 of emergency cover, valid one year from the day they land in Canada, usually at Toronto Pearson. Cambridge Memorial Hospital publishes its 2026-27 rates for non-residents of Canada: $3,750 a day on a ward and $5,750 in intensive care, before doctors' fees. Premiums are the same across Ontario, and you can talk to Pankaj in person at his Cambridge office.

What Ontario's rules mean for a visiting parent

The Super Visa rules are federal. These are the Ontario rules that decide who pays when your parent needs care in Kitchener.

1

No OHIP for visitors

OHIP covers people who live in Ontario with eligible status. A parent on a Super Visa is a visitor, however long they stay with you.

2

Hospitals set visitor prices

Each hospital publishes its own rates for non-residents of Canada. Many are about three times the rate Ontario charges other provinces for the same care.

3

Doctors and ambulance bill separately

The hospital's charge doesn't include the doctors' fees, and an ambulance is a separate bill. One emergency can bring three or four invoices.

Kitchener hospital bill estimator

Pick a hospital and the care your parent might need. The estimate uses each hospital's 2026-27 Ontario interprovincial rate times three, which is how several Ontario hospitals price care for non-residents of Canada; for Cambridge Memorial it uses the hospital's own published 2026-27 non-resident rates. Doctors' fees, tests and ambulance are extra.

What happened?

Example: a heart attack often means an emergency visit, a day or two in intensive care and several days on a ward.

911 first for anything life-threatening. For everything else, call the insurer's assistance line before going in. It can send your parent to a walk-in clinic instead of emergency and, where possible, arrange to pay the hospital directly.

Keep every paper. Keep each bill, receipt and discharge summary. Claims are paid on itemized invoices, not on a credit card slip.

Local help in Waterloo Region

Meet in Cambridge. Pankaj's office is at 206-460 Hespeler Road, Cambridge. Many Waterloo Region families prefer to sit down and go through the medical questions in person, especially for parents with a health history.

Arrival. Most parents land at Toronto Pearson and drive about an hour. The policy starts on the Pearson arrival date.

Winter. Waterloo Region gets more snow than Toronto. Falls are a common reason older visitors need emergency care; the deductible usually applies to each claim.

Students in the family. If a grandchild is studying at Waterloo, Laurier or Conestoga, see student insurance in Canada.

Questions Kitchener families ask

General questions are in the full Super Visa insurance FAQ.

Is there a Super Visa insurance advisor in Cambridge?

Yes. Pankaj Bhatia's office is at 206-460 Hespeler Road, Cambridge.

Call or WhatsApp 647-640-2222 to book a time. Many families also buy online and only call with questions.

What does Cambridge Memorial Hospital charge a visitor?

Its 2026-27 rates for non-residents of Canada are $3,750 a day on a ward and $5,750 a day in intensive care.

Doctors' fees, imaging and tests are billed on top. A CT scan, for example, is listed at $2,850 per view for non-residents.

Which hospital serves Kitchener-Waterloo?

Grand River Hospital's KW Campus on King Street West and St. Mary's General on Queen's Boulevard both have emergency departments.

Cambridge Memorial serves Cambridge. Paramedics choose the hospital in an emergency.

Can my parents get OHIP while they visit Kitchener?

No. OHIP is for people who live in Ontario and have eligible status, such as citizens and permanent residents. A parent on a Super Visa or visitor visa is a visitor.

They can still be treated at any Ontario hospital, but the hospital and the doctors bill them. That is why IRCC asks for at least $100,000 of private emergency medical insurance.

What does a Kitchener hospital charge a visitor?

Each hospital sets its own rates for non-residents of Canada, and many charge around three times the Ontario interprovincial rate.

Queensway Carleton Hospital, for example, charges non-residents $1,242 for an emergency visit and $4,005 a day on a ward from April 1, 2026, exactly three times its interprovincial rates. Doctors' fees are extra. Try the bill estimator for Kitchener hospitals.

Which date starts the policy?

The day your parent first enters Canada. For most families that is the arrival date at Toronto Pearson.

IRCC requires coverage for at least one year from the date of entry. If the flight lands after midnight, use the arrival date on the ticket, not the departure date.

Is Super Visa insurance more expensive in Kitchener?

No. Premiums depend on age, health, coverage amount and deductible, not on the city.

Sample prices by age are on the Super Visa insurance cost page; the quote form above shows exact prices.

Can we pay monthly?

Yes. IRCC accepts a policy paid in full or in monthly instalments with a deposit.

Deposits and setup fees differ by insurer. See Super Visa monthly plans.
