For families in Mill Woods, the Meadows (Silver Berry, Laurel, Tamarack), Ellerslie, Heritage Valley, Castle Downs and the Edmonton region, including St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove and Leduc. This page covers what matters in Edmonton: why Alberta Health Care won't cover a visiting parent, what ambulances and doctors charge a visitor, the start date when parents connect through Vancouver, Toronto or Calgary, and where Edmonton's emergency departments are.
The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan does not cover tourists or visitors, so parents on a Super Visa need private insurance: at least $100,000 of emergency cover, valid one year from the day they enter Canada. Few parents fly straight into Edmonton, so the start date is usually the day they land in Vancouver, Toronto or Calgary. Alberta doctors can charge a patient from outside Canada two to five times the provincial fee, and an ambulance costs a visitor $585. Premiums are the same across provinces, and Pankaj is licensed in Alberta.
The same Alberta rules apply in Edmonton as in Calgary. What they mean in practice:
Alberta Health Care covers residents. A visitor record qualifies only in narrow cases, such as clergy or the spouse, interdependent partner or dependant of an eligible resident. A parent or grandparent on a Super Visa doesn't fit.
Alberta says emergency care is not refused for lack of coverage, but visitors may be billed and are expected to pay later. The province tells visitors to buy visitor-to-Canada insurance before they arrive.
Alberta Seniors coverage (65+) waives ambulance fees for eligible Albertans. A visiting parent of the same age isn't enrolled, so the fees below apply in full.
More on how Alberta rules work for parents in the south of the province: Super Visa insurance in Calgary.
Most parents reach Edmonton International Airport on a connecting flight. The border officer admits them at the first Canadian airport, and IRCC counts the year of coverage from that date of entry, not from the day they land at YEG.
Use the local date shown on the arrival time of each flight.
Alberta Health Services does not post a public rate sheet for hospital care for non-residents of Canada; the hospital bills after care. Two charges are published.
| Charge | Visitor | What the source says |
|---|---|---|
| Ground ambulance, assessment and transport | $585 | $385 standard rate plus a $200 surcharge for non-Alberta residents |
| Ambulance assessment, no transport | $450 | $250 standard rate plus the $200 surcharge |
| Doctor's fee | 2 to 5 times | Alberta physicians may charge out-of-country patients two to five times the Schedule of Medical Benefits fee, physician fee only |
| Hospital (facility) charges | Billed separately | Not included in the doctor's fee |
For example, suppose your father has chest pain at home in Mill Woods. The ambulance bill, the Grey Nuns emergency department bill and the cardiologist's bill all arrive separately. The insurer pays covered costs up to the policy limit, so the coverage amount you pick matters more than the premium difference.
Call the insurer early. After 911, the family should call the insurer's 24/7 line as soon as possible. It can contact the hospital and arrange payment where it can, so the family isn't asked to pay up front.
Save the one nearest your home in your parent's phone with the insurer's assistance number.
| Area | Emergency department | Address |
|---|---|---|
| Southeast (Mill Woods, the Meadows) | Grey Nuns Community Hospital | 1100 Youville Drive West NW |
| West (Callingwood, Lewis Farms) | Misericordia Community Hospital | 16940 87 Avenue NW |
| Central / north | Royal Alexandra Hospital | 10240 Kingsway Avenue NW |
| South of the river (Garneau, university) | University of Alberta Hospital | 8440 112 Street NW |
| Northeast | Northeast Community Health Centre | 14007 50 Street NW |
911 first for anything life-threatening. Otherwise, call the insurer's line before going in; it may point your parent to a walk-in clinic for minor problems.
Edmonton winters are long. Ice on driveways and parking lots is a common cause of falls for older visitors. The deductible usually applies per claim, so a lower deductible can make sense for a winter stay. Good boots and a walking routine on cleared paths help prevent the claim in the first place.
Jasper, Banff and Calgary are in Canada, so the policy covers your parent there. Check the exclusions before anything adventurous; ordinary sightseeing is fine.
Long stays: a Super Visa allows stays of up to five years at a time, but each policy runs for a set period. Renew before it ends, and make sure the policy is valid each time your parent re-enters Canada, as IRCC's checklist requires.

General questions are in the full Super Visa insurance FAQ.
No. AHCIP does not cover tourists, transients or visitors, and a Super Visa parent is a visitor.
Alberta accepts a visitor record only in narrow cases, such as clergy or the spouse or dependant of an eligible resident. That is why IRCC requires private insurance.
Only an advisor licensed in Alberta. Pankaj Bhatia holds an Alberta licence as well as Ontario and five other provinces.
Edmonton families compare and buy online here; documents arrive by email for the IRCC application. Questions, refunds and claims are handled by phone, WhatsApp or video call.
The day they land in Vancouver, where they first enter Canada.
IRCC requires coverage for at least one year from the date of entry. If the Vancouver arrival is late at night and the Edmonton flight is the next morning, the Vancouver date still counts. Use the entry-date checker.
$585 for assessment and transport: the $385 standard rate plus Alberta's $200 surcharge for non-Alberta residents.
If paramedics assess your parent without taking them to hospital, it is $250 plus the surcharge. Visitor plans usually list ambulance services as covered emergency care; check the policy.
No. Alberta Seniors coverage is for eligible Albertans, not visitors.
Ambulance waivers and other seniors' benefits depend on Alberta enrolment. Your parent's Super Visa policy is what pays covered emergency costs.
Alberta physicians may charge patients from outside Canada two to five times the Alberta fee schedule.
That is the doctor's fee only; the hospital bills separately. A doctor may also ask for part or all of the fee in advance, so call the insurer before a planned visit.
No. Insurers price on age, health, coverage and deductible, the same in every province.
Price tables by age are on the Super Visa insurance cost page, and the live quote above shows current prices.
The nearest emergency department in a true emergency: Grey Nuns for Mill Woods and the Meadows, Misericordia for the west end, Royal Alexandra or Northeast Community Health Centre for the north.
For anything that isn't an emergency, call the insurer's 24/7 line first. It can direct your parent to a clinic and arrange payment where possible.
