Life insurance at age 40 in Canada: 2026 rates and how long to cover

At 40, term is still low-cost and permanent options are open. The real question is how long your need lasts.

Forty is often when the mortgage is largest and the children are youngest. Temporary coverage is still fairly cheap at this age, and permanent coverage is available if part of your need is lifelong. Below are October 2026 sample prices for a healthy 40-year-old non-smoker, by product and amount.

In short

In October 2026 samples for a regular non-smoker aged 40, 20-year term cost $19.58 to $26.33 a month for $250,000, $32.40 to $43.65 for $500,000 and $57.15 to $79.65 for $1 million (female to male). Lifelong cover for $500,000 ran from $318.67 (Term 100, female) to $1,183.50 (10-Pay, male). A 20-year term bought at 40 runs to about 60, which often matches the mortgage and the children's dependent years.

Why 20-year term is the usual starting point at 40

A 20-year term bought at 40 covers you to about 60. For many families that lines up with three things: paying off the mortgage, children becoming independent, and the run-up to retirement.

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada notes that term coverage lasts for a set period and generally starts with lower premiums than permanent insurance. At 40, the gap is wide: $500,000 of 20-year term was $43.65 a month for a man, against $367.83 for Term 100.

If your youngest child is a toddler or your mortgage has 25 years left, a 20-year term may end too soon. A 30-year term costs more per month but runs to about 70. Compare the two in Term 20 vs Term 30.

When permanent insurance makes sense at 40

If the need will exist whenever you die, renewing term again and again gets expensive. Permanent cover may fit better for:

Estate costs

Taxes and costs that land on your estate at death, at any age, such as tax on a cottage or investments.

Business ownership

Shareholder, tax, succession or key-person needs that don't end after 20 years.

Legacy

A set amount for children, a charity, or to even out an estate between heirs.

A common structure at 40 is a larger term policy for the mortgage and income, plus a smaller permanent amount for lifelong needs. For example, suppose a 40-year-old woman wants $750,000 for 20 years and $250,000 for life. The samples show $45.23 a month for the term part and $168.46 for $250,000 of Term 100. For how permanent payment periods compare, see Pay-to-65 and Term 100 vs whole life.

What moves the price at 40

Age at purchase

Five years of waiting raised a man's $500,000 term sample by about 60%, from $43.65 to $69.75.

Smoking

All samples are non-smoker. Insurers usually ask about tobacco and nicotine, vaping included, in the past 12 months. Smoker rates can be close to double.

Health

Medical history, medications, build and family history set your rating class. A rating above standard can add a lot to these samples.

Term length

Longer terms cost more per month because they cover older ages. 20 years ends at 60; 30 years ends at 70.

Amount

$1 million of term at 40 was $79.65 for a man, about three times the $26.33 for $250,000, for four times the cover.

Sample rates and your real quote

The figures are for someone exactly 40, in the regular non-smoker class, in October 2026. A real quote uses your age on the policy date, your health answers and current prices. You may qualify for a preferred class and pay less, or be rated and pay more. The lowest insurer also changes from one amount to the next.

Don't pick a policy only because it is the lowest quote. At 40, conversion privileges, renewal terms, the underwriting path and how a permanent policy is built can all matter more than a few dollars a month.

How much coverage does a 40-year-old need?

Start with the mortgage and other debts. Add the income your family would need to replace, childcare or education goals, and final costs. Subtract savings and life insurance that would really be there, such as group life that continues. The needs guide and calculator walks through it.

For prices at one amount across ages, see $250,000, $500,000 and $1 million. If you are younger, see rates at 25 and $1 million Term 40; if you are close to 50, see life insurance at 50.

Questions about life insurance at 40

How much is life insurance at age 40 in Canada?

In October 2026 samples, a regular non-smoking 40-year-old paid $19.58 to $26.33 a month for $250,000 of 20-year term and $32.40 to $43.65 for $500,000.

$1 million of 20-year term was $57.15 (female) and $79.65 (male). Permanent cover costs several times more.

Is $500,000 enough at 40?

It depends on your income, mortgage, debts, children, savings and existing coverage.

For one family it is more than enough; for another it falls short. Run the numbers in the needs guide.

Should I buy 20-year or 30-year term at 40?

Choose the term that matches how long the need lasts; if it runs past 60, compare a 30-year term even though it costs more at the start.

See Term 20 vs Term 30.

Can I combine term and whole life at 40?

Yes. A common structure is a larger term policy for the mortgage and income plus a smaller permanent amount for lifelong needs.

Two policies can also have different end dates, so cover drops as your needs drop.

How much more does it cost to wait until 45?

In the samples, a man's $500,000 20-year term went from $43.65 at 40 to $69.75 at 45, and a woman's from $32.40 to $49.95.

Health changes in those five years can add more on top.

I quit smoking last year. Which rate applies?

Insurers usually ask about tobacco or nicotine use in the past 12 months, so once you pass a year nicotine-free you may qualify for non-smoker rates.

Sun Life, for example, describes switching to non-smoker rates after 12 nicotine-free months with a declaration and a urine test. Rules vary by insurer.

What does Pay-to-65 mean if I buy at 40?

You pay premiums for 25 years, to age 65, and the policy stays in force for life.

At 40, $500,000 Pay-to-65 was $530.55 a month for a woman and $594.90 for a man in the samples.
