What does $1 million of life insurance cost in Canada? 2026 sample rates

Under $80 a month for 20-year term at 40. Over $1,000 a month for lifelong cover bought at 50.

"$1 million life insurance" can mean three very different products: a 20-year term, Term 100, or whole life. At the same age, the monthly price can differ by ten times or more. This page shows real October 2026 samples for each, explains what the numbers include, and what an insurer looks at before approving a policy this size.

In short

In October 2026 samples for regular non-smokers, $1 million of 20-year term was $57.15 a month for a 40-year-old woman and $79.65 for a man. Read the age 30 and 40 whole life figures with care. They are legitimate enhanced designs, but the quote screens show basic face amounts of $376,364 and $366,300 at 30 and $413,907 and $388,500 at 40 (male and female). They should not be read as "$1 million of whole life starting at" these prices without that explanation.

Why people look at $1 million of coverage

$1 million sounds large, but the need adds up quickly. For example, suppose a family has a $500,000 mortgage, one parent earns $70,000 after tax, and there are two young children. Replacing that income for even a few years, clearing the mortgage and setting aside money for school can pass $1 million. Business owners can add shareholder, debt or key-person needs on top.

Still, a round number is a starting point, not an answer. The right amount comes from a needs analysis. Some families land at $500,000; others need more than $1 million.

What drives the price of $1 million

At this size, small differences in rating class become large dollar amounts.

Age

The male Term 100 sample rises from $457.83 at 30 to $718.67 at 40 and $1,126.17 at 50. The female sample goes from $397.35 to $614.50 to $973.67.

Product and term length

At 40, a man's $1 million was $79.65 for 20-year term and $718.67 for Term 100, nine times as much. A 30- or 40-year term sits in between.

Smoking

All samples are non-smoker. Insurers usually ask about tobacco and nicotine, including vaping, in the past year, and smoker premiums can run close to double.

Health

Medical history, medications, build and family history set your class. On $1 million, a step up or down in class is worth a lot each month.

Amount

Cost per $1,000 often falls as the amount rises. At 40, a man's 20-year term was $26.33 for $250,000 and $79.65 for $1 million, about three times the price for four times the cover.

What underwriting can look like at $1 million

The quote screens behind this page show a mix of paths: tele-interviews, predictive analytics, non-medical processing and, on some permanent products, possible vitals, blood and urine tests. Insurers can ask for more evidence based on your age, the amount, your medical history and their own rules.

Insurers also check that the amount makes financial sense. Approval depends on financial justification as well as health, and each insurer has its own limits.

Because the price is fixed only after underwriting, the sample rates here are a guide. Your quote can come in lower if you qualify for a preferred class, or higher if the insurer rates the policy for health or lifestyle.

Term or permanent for $1 million?

A large need that ends, such as income replacement while children grow up or a mortgage, usually points to term. The FCAC notes that term premiums start lower than permanent ones. A need that lasts for life, such as estate tax on a cottage or business, or equalizing an estate, can justify permanent cover. Many people use both: a large term policy and a smaller permanent one.

If you are under 35 and want cover that runs into your 60s or 70s, see $1 million Term 40 and rates at age 25. For the full product list at one age, see age 40 or age 50.

Questions about $1 million of life insurance

How much is $1 million of life insurance a month in Canada?

In October 2026 samples, $1 million of 20-year term was $57.15 to $79.65 a month at 40, while Term 100 was $397.35 to $1,126.17 across ages 30 to 50.

All figures are regular non-smoker rates. Your quote depends on your age, health and the product.

Can a 30-year-old get $1 million of life insurance?

Often yes, if the amount is financially justified and you pass medical underwriting.

Younger applicants usually pay less than older ones with similar health. At 30, $1 million of Term 40 started at $135.90 (male) and $84.60 (female) on the Term 40 page.

Should $1 million be term or permanent?

It depends on why you need it: temporary family-income or mortgage needs usually point to term, and lifelong estate or business needs may justify permanent.

Some clients split the amount between the two.

Why is $1 million of whole life so much more than term?

Whole life is built to last for life and may include guaranteed cash values, while term covers a set period and usually has no cash value.

At 50, a man's sample was $230.85 a month for 20-year term and $1,290.15 for Life Pay whole life.

What does "basic face below $1M" mean in the whole life table?

The lowest age 30 and 40 whole life results were enhanced designs where the guaranteed basic face amount was smaller, for example $376,364 for a 30-year-old man.

The rest of the death benefit comes from how the policy is built. Ask exactly what is guaranteed before comparing such a quote with others.

Do I need a medical exam for $1 million?

Not always; some insurers use tele-interviews or non-medical processing, but some permanent products may ask for vitals, blood and urine tests.

The requirements depend on your age, the amount, your history and the insurer.

Is 50 too old for $1 million?

No. At 50, $1 million of 20-year term was $150.83 a month for a woman and $230.85 for a man in the samples.
