Life insurance at age 50 in Canada: 2026 rates and what to review first
Still widely available at 50, but a new policy costs well more than at 40. Check any old policy before you replace it.
At 50, most people can still buy life insurance, but the price of a new policy is noticeably higher than ten years earlier. It is also the age to look at term length, retirement timing and lifelong estate needs together. Here are October 2026 sample prices for a healthy 50-year-old non-smoker.
In short
In October 2026 samples for a regular non-smoker aged 50, 20-year term cost $46.80 to $68.63 a month for $250,000, $81.00 to $120.15 for $500,000 and $150.83 to $230.85 for $1 million (female to male). That is roughly 2.4 to 2.9 times the age-40 price. Lifelong cover for $500,000 ran from $498.15 (Term 100) to $1,674.00 (10-Pay). Before buying, check what any existing policy already gives you.

What a 20-year term means at 50
A new 20-year term bought at 50 gives level cover to about 70. That can fit a mortgage that still has years to run, family members who depend on you, late-career income, or business debt.
Pay attention to what happens at the end. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada notes that premiums may increase when a term policy renews, and at 70 the renewal price can be much higher. Read the renewal schedule and the conversion deadline before you sign, not when the term ends.
If your need ends sooner, a shorter term may be enough. If it lasts for life, compare permanent options below.

When permanent insurance becomes more relevant
By 50, most people can see which obligations are temporary and which will last. Estate tax, business succession, evening out an estate between children and final costs may justify permanent cover. A mortgage or the need to replace work income may still fit term. See estate tax and life insurance for the lifelong side.
Pay-to-65 at 50 is really a 15-pay policy
A policy bought at 50 and paid up at 65 squeezes all the premiums into 15 years. That is why the $500,000 Pay-to-65 sample, $1,408.50 a month for a man, is more than double the Life Pay sample of $655.65. Always turn "Pay-to-65" into the actual number of payment years for your age. More on this in Pay-to-65 whole life.
Plan for premiums after you retire
For example, suppose you plan to retire at 62. A Life Pay policy keeps billing you for decades after your paycheque stops. A policy should be set up around realistic retirement cash flow, not only today's earnings, and it should not crowd out your retirement savings.
What sets the price at 50
Age
A man's $500,000 20-year term sample was $43.65 at 40, $120.15 at 50 and $208.80 at 55. Each five years now adds a lot.
Health
By 50, medical history and medications weigh more in the rating. Disclose everything; a rated policy is better than a contested claim.
Smoking
These are non-smoker rates. Insurers usually ask about tobacco and nicotine, including vaping, in the past 12 months. Smoker rates can be close to double.
Term and pay period
20-year term ends at about 70. For permanent cover, a shorter pay period (10-Pay, Pay-to-65) raises the monthly bill.
Amount
$1 million of 20-year term at 50 was $150.83 for a woman, under twice the $81.00 for $500,000.
Have an older policy? Review it before you replace it
Many people in their 50s already own a term policy bought 10 or 20 years ago. Before you buy something new, look at its renewal schedule and its conversion privilege. An older policy may include a conversion privilege that lets you switch to permanent insurance, a right you lose if you cancel it.
Never cancel a policy until the replacement is fully approved and in force. Pankaj can compare the existing policy's renewal price with current quotes so you can see the real choice.
How the samples differ from your quote
Each figure is the lowest clean result for someone exactly 50, regular non-smoker class, in October 2026. Your quote uses your age on the policy date, your health answers and current rates, and the insurer sets the final price after underwriting. A preferred class can come in lower; a rating for health can come in higher.
For other ages and amounts, see life insurance at 40, term rates by age, $250,000, $500,000 and $1 million. For a younger family member, see rates at 25 or $1 million Term 40.
Questions about life insurance at 50
How much is life insurance at 50 in Canada?
In October 2026 samples, a regular non-smoking 50-year-old paid $46.80 to $68.63 a month for $250,000 of 20-year term and $81.00 to $120.15 for $500,000.
Term 100 for $500,000 was $498.15 (female) and $569.70 (male).
Is 50 too old for $1 million of life insurance?
No. Approval depends on financial justification, health and insurer limits; the premium is simply higher than at younger ages.
The samples show $150.83 a month for a woman and $230.85 for a man for $1 million of 20-year term at 50.
Should I buy permanent coverage before I retire?
Only if there is a real lifelong need and the premiums fit your retirement plan.
Permanent insurance should not weaken your retirement savings or the cash you need to live on.
I already have an older term policy. Should I replace it?
Review its renewal schedule and conversion privilege first; it may hold rights you would lose by cancelling.
Keep it in force until any new policy is fully approved and issued.
Why is Pay-to-65 so expensive at 50?
Because it means only 15 years of premiums, so each payment is larger.
At 50, $500,000 Pay-to-65 was $1,408.50 a month for a man against $655.65 for Life Pay in the samples.
What happens when a 20-year term bought at 50 ends?
Cover ends at about 70 unless you renew or convert, and renewal premiums can be much higher.
Check the renewal and conversion terms before you buy.
Can I get coverage at 50 with a health condition?
Often yes, but the insurer may rate the policy, which raises the price above these samples.
Answer the medical questions fully. Pankaj can compare insurers, since each one rates conditions differently.
