Pay-to-65 whole life insurance: premiums end at 65, coverage does not

35 years of premiums if you start at 30, 25 at 40, and only 15 at 50. Same label, very different policy.

Pay-to-65 whole life is built for people who want permanent coverage without an insurance bill in retirement. How much it costs, and how long you pay, depends almost entirely on the age you start. This page shows both.

In short

Pay-to-65 whole life stops the base premiums at age 65 and covers you for life. Start at 30 and you pay for 35 years; at 40, 25 years; at 50, only 15 years. In October 2026 samples, $500,000 costs $339.30 a month for a 30-year-old man, $594.90 at 40 and $1,408.50 at 50.

How many years you actually pay

"Pay-to-65" is a finish line, not a fixed number of years. The premium-paying period (PPP) in the samples is simply 65 minus your age at issue.

Issue ageYears of premiumsWorks like
3035A 35-pay schedule
4025A 25-pay schedule
5015A 15-pay schedule

So the same label means very different things. At 30, Pay-to-65 gives you a long, gentle schedule that costs only a little more than Life Pay. At 50, it is a short, steep schedule that costs much closer to 10-Pay. Any Pay-to-65 recommendation should state your issue age and the number of years you will pay.

Total Pay-to-65 premiums by issue age

Sample monthly premium times 12 times the years to 65, before any time value of money. A budgeting figure, not a quote.

Issue ageCoverageYearsMale, totalFemale, total
30$250,00035$72,954.00$63,033.60
30$500,00035$142,506.00$120,960.00

50$500,00015$253,530.00$200,151.00

For example, suppose a 40-year-old man buys $500,000 at $594.90 a month. Over 25 years he pays about $178,470.00. Buying the same amount at 30 for $339.30 a month would total about $142,506.00 over 35 years, but that only matters if the permanent need was already there at 30.

Why people choose Pay-to-65

Premiums end at retirement

No insurance bill to pay out of a pension or RRIF, while the coverage keeps going for life.

A middle ground when young

At 30 or 35, it is far less steep than 10-Pay or 20-Pay and still has an end date.

A need that lasts for life

Estate taxes, final costs or a legacy. For a mortgage or income need that ends, term insurance is usually cheaper.

Pay-to-65 vs 10-Pay and Life Pay

At age 30, Pay-to-65 means 35 years of premiums. A man's $500,000 sample is $339.30 a month, against $728.55 for 10-Pay and $251.59 for Life Pay. 10-Pay finishes 25 years sooner but costs more than twice as much each month.

At age 40, the $500,000 sample is $594.90 for a man, against $1,183.50 for 10-Pay and $411.30 for Life Pay.

At age 50, Pay-to-65 is only 15 years, so it behaves like a limited-pay plan: $1,408.50 a month for a man, not far from the 10-Pay sample of $1,674.00.

The full side-by-side, including 20-Pay, is on the payment options page, and the cost calculator shows every structure for your age.

Check two dates on the illustration

First, the year the last base premium is due, which should line up with age 65. Second, the guaranteed cash value and paid-up value at that point. Those two lines tell you what you are buying better than the monthly premium does.

Pay-to-65 whole life questions

What does Pay-to-65 whole life mean?

It is whole life coverage where the base premiums stop at age 65 and the coverage continues for life, subject to the contract.

The number of years you pay depends on your age when the policy starts: 35 years at 30, 25 at 40 and 15 at 50.

Is Pay-to-65 fully paid up at 65?

The base policy is designed so scheduled premiums end at 65.

Riders can have separate premium periods, so check whether any rider continues past 65.

Why is Pay-to-65 so expensive at age 50?

Because only 15 years remain until 65, so the funding is packed into a much shorter period than for a 30-year-old.

In the samples, $500,000 for a 50-year-old man is $1,408.50 a month, against $339.30 at age 30.

How much is $500,000 of Pay-to-65 whole life?

In October 2026 samples it is $339.30 (man) and $288.00 (woman) a month at age 30, $594.90 and $530.55 at 40, and $1,408.50 and $1,111.95 at 50.

These are base monthly premiums for regular non-smokers, without waiver riders.

Is Pay-to-65 better than Life Pay?

It depends on whether you value a lower monthly premium now or having premiums finished by retirement.

Life Pay costs less each month but can bill until 100. See whole life payment options.

Why do people want premiums to end at 65?

Many people expect lower income after they retire and would rather not carry an insurance bill on a pension.

Pay-to-65 matches the end of premiums to a common retirement age, while the coverage keeps going.

Does Pay-to-65 make sense if I am 55?

At 55, Pay-to-65 would mean only 10 years of premiums, the same as a 10-Pay policy, so compare the two directly.

Insurers set their own issue ages for each design. Ask Pankaj which designs are offered at your age.
