Whole life insurance cost in Canada: 2026 rates by age and payment option
$500,000 at age 40 can cost $337 or $1,184 a month. The difference is mostly how many years you choose to pay.
Whole life costs more than term because it is meant to last for life and usually builds a cash value. How much more depends on your age, your health and, above all, the payment schedule you pick. Here are real October 2026 samples and a calculator to compare them.
In short
In October 2026 samples, $500,000 of whole life for a 40-year-old non-smoker costs about $337 to $411 a month on Life Pay, $531 to $595 on Pay-to-65 and $995 to $1,184 on 10-Pay. Price is driven by age, health and how many years you pay. Many of the cheapest quotes are enhanced designs, so compare the basic face amount and guaranteed values, not only the premium.

Whole life cost calculator
Pick a profile from the sample data to see the monthly premium, how long you would pay and the total of all scheduled premiums for each structure.
Totals are monthly premium times 12 times the years of premiums, with no interest or inflation. Life Pay assumes you pay until age 100. Sample rates only; your quote will differ.
Why the price changes so much by payment option
The coverage can be the same. What changes is how many years the insurer has to collect the funding.
Life Pay
The longest schedule and the lowest monthly cost, but premiums can continue for many decades: 70 years if you start at 30.
To choose between these structures, rather than just price them, see whole life payment options.
How age changes whole life premiums
Age is one of the biggest pricing factors. In the Pay-to-65 samples for $500,000, the man's premium rises from $339.30 at 30 to $594.90 at 40 and $1,408.50 at 50. The woman's rises from $288.00 to $530.55 to $1,111.95.
Part of that jump is age and part is the shorter time to 65. On Life Pay, where the schedule runs to 100 at every age, the man's $500,000 sample goes from $251.59 at 30 to $411.30 at 40 and $655.65 at 50.
That does not mean everyone should buy whole life early because it is cheaper. A permanent policy should solve a permanent need and stay affordable for the full premium period. If your main need today is protecting a mortgage or income, start with term life and add permanent coverage when the lifelong need appears. Our life insurance at 50 page covers the later-start case.

Enhanced whole life vs a simple level policy
Quote engines often rank an enhanced whole life design as the cheapest. The screen may show a $500,000 death benefit while the basic face amount is much lower, sometimes under half. That can be a perfectly good design, but it is not the same as a $500,000 basic whole life contract.
Compare these, not only the premium: basic face amount, total death benefit over time, guaranteed cash values, paid-up values, the premium period, and whether any part depends on non-guaranteed dividends.
What is a reasonable whole life budget?
The better question is not "what is the cheapest policy?" but "what can I keep paying comfortably while still meeting my savings, debt and retirement goals?" A smaller permanent policy you keep is more useful than a large one that becomes hard to carry. Work out the amount first with how much life insurance you need.
Whole life insurance cost questions
How much is $500,000 of whole life insurance in Canada?
For a regular non-smoker aged 40, the October 2026 samples range from about $337 to $411 a month for Life Pay, $531 to $595 for Pay-to-65 and $995 to $1,184 for 10-Pay.
The lower figure in each range is the woman's sample and the higher the man's. Your own price depends on health, smoking status and the insurer.
How much is $250,000 of whole life insurance?
At age 30 the samples start at $114.92 a month (woman) and $133.80 (man) on Life Pay; at 50 they start at $288.90 and $330.53.
The age-50 Life Pay figures may be Term 100 style products, so confirm the product type before you compare.
Why does whole life cost more than term?
Whole life is meant to cover you for life and usually builds a cash value, while term covers a set period and has no cash value.
For a temporary need such as a mortgage, term insurance buys much more coverage for the same budget.
Why is 10-Pay so expensive per month?
The whole premium schedule is packed into 10 years, so more is needed each month.
You trade a higher payment now for a much shorter payment period. See 10-Pay whole life.
Is whole life always more expensive than Term 100?
Not always. The two can price surprisingly close, but they are different contracts.
Term 100 cash values may be limited or absent, depending on the product, while whole life commonly includes guaranteed cash values. Compare the cash values and guarantees before you decide. See Term 100 vs whole life.
What affects the price of whole life insurance?
Age, health, smoking status, sex where the insurer prices by it, the coverage amount, the premium period, the product design and the insurer.
Participating policies are usually priced differently from non-participating ones, too.
Should I buy whole life young because it is cheaper?
Only if you already have a need that will last for life and can keep paying for the whole premium period.
A lower monthly price at 30 is not a saving if you surrender the policy at 45.
Why are some whole life quotes so much cheaper?
Many of the lowest results are enhanced designs, where the quoted death benefit includes a much smaller basic policy plus extra insurance.
