How much does $500,000 of life insurance cost? Term vs permanent, 2026 rates
Under $50 a month for 20-year term at 40. Several hundred to over $1,000 a month for lifelong coverage.
$500,000 is one of the most searched amounts, and for good reason: it is close to what many families with a mortgage and young children end up needing. But the price swings widely depending on which product you mean. The table below puts the products side by side for ages 30, 40 and 50.
In short
In October 2026 samples for regular non-smokers, $500,000 of 20-year term cost $32.40 a month for a 40-year-old woman and $43.65 for a 40-year-old man, and $81.00 and $120.15 at 50. Lifelong coverage costs far more: Term 100 was $206.55 to $569.70 a month across ages 30 to 50, and 10-Pay whole life passed $1,000 a month from age 40 for men. Which product fits matters as much as the amount.

Why $500,000 of 20-year term costs so much less
A 20-year term policy prices only the chance that you die in the next 20 years. It normally builds no cash value. That makes it the low-cost choice for needs that end: a mortgage, young children, or replacing your income until you retire.
The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada notes that term premiums are generally lower than permanent premiums when you first buy, and that they may increase when you renew. So the low price lasts for the term. If you still need cover after 20 years, the renewal price will be much higher, or you would need to convert or reapply.
For example, suppose a 40-year-old woman buys $500,000 of 20-year term at the $32.40 sample. Her family is covered to about 60, when the mortgage may be paid off and the children working. For many families that is the whole need.

Why permanent $500,000 coverage costs more
Permanent insurance is meant for a need that will still exist when you die, whatever your age. Whole life policies can include guaranteed cash values and paid-up values. Term 100 focuses on a lifelong death benefit with few or no extras, which is why it is the lowest-cost permanent option in the table.
The payment period changes the monthly bill a lot. At 40, a man's sample was $411.30 a month if he pays for life, $594.90 if he pays to 65, and $1,183.50 if he pays it all in 10 years. Shorter payment periods cost more each month but end sooner. See Pay-to-65, 10-Pay and Term 100 vs whole life for the trade-offs.
You can also split the $500,000: part term for the years the mortgage runs, part permanent for the lifelong need. The $250,000 page shows a worked layering example.
What sets the price of $500,000 of coverage
Each of these moves the premium. The table only shows two of them, age and product.
Age
A man's 20-year term sample nearly triples from $43.65 at 40 to $120.15 at 50. Buying earlier, while healthy, locks in the lower level price for the term.
Smoking
These are non-smoker rates. Insurers usually ask about tobacco and nicotine in the past 12 months, vaping included. Smoker rates can be close to double.
Health
Medical history, medications, build and family history decide your rating class. At $500,000 insurers may ask for more evidence than at smaller amounts.
Term length
A 30-year term costs more per month than a 20-year term at the same age, because it covers you into older ages. Compare in Term 20 vs Term 30.
Amount
At 40, a man's $500,000 term sample was $43.65, not double the $26.33 for $250,000. Price bands often lower the cost per $1,000 at higher amounts.
Sample rate or real quote: what changes
Each figure here is the lowest clean result in one October 2026 survey, for a healthy regular non-smoker at an exact age. Your price will move if you are 44 rather than 40, if you qualify for a preferred class or are rated up, if you add riders, or if insurers have changed rates since. The cheapest insurer also changes with age and amount.
"Clean" means some results were left out on purpose. Quote software ranks by price, not by fit. Where the cheapest result was an enhanced design or a product type that needed explaining, it is marked or excluded rather than shown as a simple lowest price. A live quote and a talk about the policy terms give you the real number.
Is $500,000 enough life insurance?
For family protection, add the mortgage and other debt, the after-tax income your family would need to replace, childcare, education and final costs. Then subtract savings and any coverage that would really remain, such as group life at work.
For permanent planning, the amount comes from a different sum: estate tax, equalizing an estate between children, a charitable gift or a business obligation.
Don't choose $500,000 because it is a popular number. Use the needs guide. If the answer is closer to half, see $250,000 cost; if it is double, see $1 million cost or $1 million Term 40. For one age across all amounts, see age 40, age 50 or term rates by age.
Questions about $500,000 of life insurance
How much is $500,000 of term life insurance at age 50?
In the October 2026 samples, $500,000 of 20-year term at 50 was $120.15 a month for a regular non-smoking man and $81.00 for a woman.
That covers you to about 70. At 40 the same cover was $43.65 and $32.40.
How much is $500,000 of whole life insurance at age 40?
It depends on how long you pay: about $337 to $411 a month for Life Pay, $531 to $595 for Pay-to-65 and $995 to $1,184 for 10-Pay.
Term 100, a lifelong death benefit with little or no cash value, was $318.67 for a woman and $367.83 for a man.
What does $500,000 cost at age 30?
Permanent samples at 30 ranged from $206.55 a month (Term 100, female) to $728.55 (10-Pay, male); the 20-year term sample was not captured.
For young term prices, see rates at age 25, where $500,000 of Term 30 was $34.20 for men and $24.75 for women.
Can I split $500,000 between term and permanent?
Yes. Layering works when part of the need is temporary and part is lifelong.
For example, suppose $250,000 is needed for life and $250,000 only while the mortgage runs. Two policies can match that better than one.
Do smokers pay more for $500,000?
Yes, much more; every rate on this page is a non-smoker rate.
Sun Life's published example shows a 30-year-old man paying $50.13 a month as a non-smoker and $98.01 as a smoker for $700,000 of 20-year term.
What happens when a 20-year term ends?
Coverage ends unless the policy is renewable, and renewal premiums can be much higher.
Many term policies also allow conversion to permanent insurance before a deadline. Check both before you buy.
Will my quote match these numbers?
Probably not exactly, because your age, health, rating class and the date of the quote all change the price.
Use the quote form for current prices, then the insurer sets the final premium after underwriting.
