How much does $250,000 of life insurance cost in Canada? 2026 sample rates
From about $20 a month for 20-year term at 40, to several hundred a month for coverage that lasts for life.
$250,000 is a common amount for a small mortgage balance, final expenses, or a top-up to group insurance at work. It is also a handy size for comparing product types, because the gap between temporary and lifelong coverage is easy to see. The table below shows real October 2026 sample prices for healthy non-smokers.
In short
In October 2026 sample data, $250,000 of 20-year term cost about $19.58 a month for a 40-year-old woman and $26.33 for a 40-year-old man, rising to $46.80 and $68.63 at 50. Coverage that lasts for life costs far more: Term 100 was $168.46 to $296.58 a month at 40 to 50. These are regular non-smoker samples; your own price depends on your age, health, smoking status and the term you choose.

"Quote only": the age-30 grid for 20-year term was not captured in the data used here, so use the quote form for that price. For a younger comparison, see rates at age 25, where $250,000 of Term 30 started at $22.05 (male) and $15.53 (female). *Some Life Pay results are enhanced designs. †At age 50, the whole life survey can include Term 100 or Solution 100 products, so the classification needs checking before a recommendation.

What $250,000 of life insurance is used for
The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada lists the usual uses of a death benefit: replacing lost income, providing for children or other dependants, paying debts, covering funeral costs and making a charitable gift. At $250,000, families tend to use it in three ways.
Paying off a mortgage or other debt
A lump sum can clear a smaller mortgage or a line of credit. With an individual policy, your beneficiary decides how to spend the money.
Final expenses and estate costs
A small permanent policy can cover costs that never go away: the funeral, final bills, or taxes and fees at the estate level.
A top-up or a permanent base
$250,000 can sit on top of group life at work, which may end if you leave the job. It can also be the lifelong layer under a larger term policy.

Using $250,000 as a permanent layer under term
Many families have two kinds of need. Some money is needed only until the mortgage is paid and the children are grown. Some is needed whenever death happens, even at 90. One product rarely fits both well.
For example, suppose a 40-year-old decides that $250,000 is needed for life, for final costs and an inheritance, and another $750,000 is needed only for the next 20 years. Rather than buying $1 million of whole life, the family could pair a $250,000 permanent policy with a $750,000 20-year term. At 40, the samples on this site show $250,000 of Term 100 at $194.71 a month for a man and $750,000 of 20-year term at $62.10. The term part falls away at 60, when the mortgage and child-raising years should be behind you.
Whether that split makes sense depends on your real numbers. Work out how much you need first, then pick the products.
What drives the price of a $250,000 policy
The same $250,000 can cost $20 or $860 a month. Five things explain most of the gap.
Age when you buy
A man's 20-year term sample goes from $26.33 at 40 to $68.63 at 50, about 2.6 times as much. Term 100 goes from $125.33 at 30 to $296.58 at 50.
Smoking and nicotine
All rates here are non-smoker. Insurers usually ask about tobacco or nicotine use in the past year, including vaping. Sun Life's own example shows a smoker paying nearly double.
Health and underwriting
Medical history, build, medications and family history set your rating class. A rating can raise the price well above these samples.
How long cover lasts
A 20-year term prices only 20 years of risk. Term 100 and whole life cover you for life, so they cost several times more from day one.
Amount and pay period
Larger amounts often cost less per $1,000. Paying whole life off in 10 years instead of for life raises the monthly bill, as the 10-Pay column shows.
Sex matters too: the women's samples are lower than the men's at every age in the table.
How these sample rates differ from your real quote
The table shows the lowest clean result in one survey, for a person who qualifies as a regular non-smoker. Your quote can differ for several reasons:
- Your exact age. Insurers price on your age when the policy is issued. A 43-year-old falls between the 40 and 50 rows.
- Your rating class. Some people qualify for a preferred class below these prices. Others are rated up for health, build or a hobby.
- The insurer. The lowest-priced company changes with age, amount and term. That is why a live comparison helps.
- Date. Insurers change rates. These samples are from October 2026.
- Riders. Adding a child rider, waiver of premium or critical illness cover adds cost.
Treat the table as a starting point. The quote form shows current prices for your own age, and the final premium is set after the insurer approves your application.
Is $250,000 enough?
Don't decide from the premium. Start with what your family would lose. Add up the mortgage and debts, the after-tax income they would need to replace, childcare and education, and final costs. Subtract savings and other insurance that would really be there. If the gap is near $250,000, this amount fits. If it is larger, compare $500,000 or $1 million, where the cost per $1,000 is often lower.

Questions about $250,000 of life insurance
How much is $250,000 of life insurance per month in Canada?
In October 2026 samples, $250,000 of 20-year term was $19.58 to $26.33 a month at age 40 and $46.80 to $68.63 at age 50 for regular non-smokers.
Lifelong coverage costs more: Term 100 was $110.93 to $296.58 a month across ages 30 to 50, and 10-Pay whole life was $348.32 to $866.24.
Is $250,000 enough to cover a mortgage?
It depends on the balance you owe and on what else your family would need after your death.
The mortgage is only one part of the need. Add income replacement, childcare and final costs, then subtract savings and existing coverage.
Why is $250,000 of permanent insurance so much more than term?
Permanent insurance is built to pay out whenever you die, while 20-year term covers only a set period and normally has no cash value.
At age 40, the male sample was $26.33 a month for 20-year term and $194.71 for Term 100, about 7.4 times as much.
How much more do smokers pay for $250,000?
The samples on this page are non-smoker only, and smoker premiums are much higher.
Sun Life's published example shows a 30-year-old man paying $50.13 a month as a non-smoker and $98.01 as a smoker for $700,000 of 20-year term. Insurers usually ask about tobacco and nicotine use, including vaping, in the past 12 months.
Can I buy more coverage later?
Usually yes, but the price and approval will depend on your age and health at that time.
Some term policies include a conversion option that lets you switch to permanent insurance before a set deadline. Check the conversion terms before you buy.
What does $250,000 of 20-year term cost at age 30?
That grid was not captured in the October 2026 sample data, so use the quote form for a live price.
For a younger reference, the age 25 page shows $250,000 of Term 30 from $22.05 a month for men and $15.53 for women.
Is $500,000 twice the price of $250,000?
No. At age 40, $500,000 of 20-year term was $43.65 a month for a man, about 1.66 times the $26.33 price of $250,000.
Insurers often use price bands, so the cost per $1,000 can fall as the amount rises. See $500,000 life insurance cost.

No. Pankaj is licensed in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, not Quebec.
