Term 20 vs Term 30 life insurance: which length fits your family

Term 20 costs less and suits needs that end within 20 years. Term 30 costs more and suits a new mortgage or young children.

Most families choosing term life insurance end up between 20 and 30 years. The right answer is the one that lasts as long as your debts and dependants do. The check below takes a minute, and sometimes the answer is a split between the two.

In short

Choose Term 20 if your mortgage, children's dependency and income need all end within about 20 years. Choose Term 30 if any of them runs longer, as with a new 25 or 30-year mortgage or a newborn. Term 30 has a higher starting premium for 10 more years at a level price. If one need ends at 20 years and another at 30, splitting the amount between both terms often costs less.

When a 20-year term makes more sense

Term 20 lines up well when the mortgage will be mostly paid within 20 years, your children are already in school, or you expect to retire within two decades. Paying for a longer guarantee makes little sense if the need clearly ends sooner.

For example, suppose you are 42, the mortgage has 16 years left and your youngest is 10. Every need is gone by about 58. A 20-year term covers you to 62 with room to spare.

When a 30-year term is worth it

Term 30 fits a younger parent with a newborn, a fresh 25 or 30-year mortgage, or anyone whose income need will run past 20 years. You pay more at the start for 10 more years before the first term ends.

For example, suppose you are 31, you just signed a 25-year mortgage and your child is 1. The mortgage runs to 56 and your child turns 25 when you are 55. Term 20 would stop at 51, leaving several years uncovered. Term 30 runs to 61.

Don't ignore the conversion and renewal rules

If two policies are close in price, the better choice may come down to the contract. Conversion lets you move eligible term coverage into permanent insurance without new medical underwriting, but age limits, deadlines and the plans you can convert to differ by insurer.

Renewal can differ too. At BMO, Term 10, 15 and 20 renew to age 85, while Term 25 and 30 do not renew. At Equitable, Term 10 and 20 renew to 85. A Term 30 that cannot renew is fine if you are sure the need ends, but it matters if it might not.

Match the term to the debt

Buying 30 years only because longer feels safer can waste premium. Buying 20 years for a 30-year need can leave you shopping for new cover in your 50s, when health changes make it dearer or harder to get. A split between the two is often the cheapest way to cover both.

Term 20 vs Term 30 questions

Is Term 20 or Term 30 better?

Neither is better in general. Term 20 fits needs that end within about 20 years; Term 30 fits needs that last longer.

Count the years left on your mortgage, the years until your youngest child is independent and the years until you retire. The longest one decides.

Should a 40-year-old buy Term 20 or Term 30?

If your main need ends by about 60, Term 20 is a natural fit. If it runs toward 70, compare Term 30.

Health, budget and conversion rules also matter. At 40, a $500,000 Term 20 for a non-smoking man was $43.65 a month in our sample.

How much more does Term 30 cost than Term 20?

Term 30 starts higher because the price is guaranteed for 10 more years. The gap depends on your age, health and insurer.

Get both quotes at the same age, health class and amount. The live form above shows them side by side.

What happens when a 20-year term ends?

Depending on the contract, it can renew at a much higher premium, be converted before a deadline, or simply end.

Some 25 and 30-year terms cannot be renewed at all; BMO's Term 25 and 30, for example, do not renew. Check the schedule before buying.

Can I buy both Term 20 and Term 30?

Yes. Splitting the amount across two terms, called laddering, works when part of the need ends in 20 years and part lasts 30.

For example, the mortgage portion on Term 20 and the income portion on Term 30. Some insurers, such as Equitable, let several terms sit in one policy with one policy fee.

Does the conversion privilege differ between Term 20 and Term 30?

It can. Conversion is usually available on both, but the deadline age and the permanent plans you can switch to are set by each contract.

If two quotes are close in price, the one with the later conversion deadline may be worth more to you.

Can I start with Term 20 and lengthen it later?

Some insurers allow an exchange to a longer term without medical evidence within the first few years.

Co-operators lets you exchange Term 10 for a longer term in the first 5 years; Desjardins allows exchanges within 7 years. Ask before relying on it.
