2025 Super Visa: New LICO & Insurance Requirements
If you are planning to bring your parents or grandparents to Canada on a Super Visa, you must meet updated 2025 income thresholds and mandatory medical insurance rules.
New 2025 Super Visa Income Requirements (LICO)
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has increased the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) figures for 2025. This is the minimum gross annual income you (the child or grandchild in Canada) must earn to host your parents or grandparents on a Super Visa.
As the cost of living rises, these thresholds go up to ensure sponsors can support visiting family members without relying on social assistance.
2024 vs 2025 Income Thresholds
Family size includes you, your spouse or partner, your dependent children, and all parents or grandparents you are inviting.
| Family Size | 2024 Requirement | 2025 Requirement (New) | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person | $29,380 | $30,526 | +$1,146 |
| 2 persons | $36,576 | $38,002 | +$1,426 |
| 3 persons | $44,966 | $46,720 | +$1,754 |
| 4 persons | $54,594 | $56,724 | +$2,130 |
| 5 persons | $61,920 | $64,336 | +$2,416 |
| 6 persons | $69,834 | $72,560 | +$2,726 |
| 7 persons | $77,750 | $80,784 | +$3,034 |
| Each additional | + $7,916 | + $8,224 | +$308 |
Tip: Always use the latest LICO table when you submit your application, as IRCC can update these figures each year.
How to Calculate Your Family Size
Incorrect family size is one of the most common reasons for delays or refusals. You must include everyone who is financially dependent on you, even if they are not travelling to Canada.
You are married with two children and want to invite your mother and father on a Super Visa:
You (1) + Spouse (1) + Kids (2) + Parents (2) = 6 people in your family size.
For 6 people, you must show a minimum gross income of $72,560 for 2025.
Who You Must Count
- Yourself (the host in Canada).
- Your spouse or common-law partner (even if not co‑signing).
- All dependent children.
- Each parent or grandparent you are inviting on a Super Visa.
- Any other persons you are financially responsible for under previous sponsorship undertakings.
How to Prove Your Income
IRCC requires documentation to confirm that your income meets or exceeds the LICO amount for your family size.
Accepted Proof of Income
- Most recent Notice of Assessment (NOA) from CRA.
- T4 or T1 for the latest tax year.
- Employment letter stating job title, salary, hours, and start date.
- Recent pay stubs.
- Employment Insurance benefit statements (if applicable).
- Recent bank statements or other proof of regular income.
If you are self‑employed, you may also include a letter from your accountant and business financial statements.
Mandatory Medical Insurance – How to Save
Meeting the income requirement is only the first step. Every Super Visa applicant must also hold private medical insurance from a Canadian insurer with:
- Minimum coverage of $100,000.
- Validity for at least 1 year from the date of entry.
- Coverage for healthcare, hospitalization and repatriation.
This can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000 per parent, depending on age and health. Choosing the right policy can significantly reduce your costs.
How Pankaj Bhatia Helps You Save
- Comparison Shopping: Rates are compared across multiple leading Canadian insurers (such as Manulife, Travelance, 21st Century and others) to find the most competitive premium for your parents’ age and health profile.
- Monthly Payment Options: Instead of paying the full year upfront (e.g., $3,000), structured monthly plans can improve cash flow while still meeting IRCC requirements.
- Refund Guarantee: If the Super Visa is refused, you receive a 100% refund of the insurance premium, subject to policy terms.
