Term-to-term

Evolve can be moved to a term at least 10 years longer without new medical evidence, before the 7th policy anniversary.

Conversion to 75

Evolve is guaranteed convertible to permanent coverage until the anniversary nearest age 75.

Joint and multi-life

Joint first-to-die includes a survivor benefit. One policy can hold up to five single lives. Joint policies can't be split later.

Riders

Child term, accidental death, total disability waiver, owner waiver, guaranteed insurability and business value protection.

Sun Life gives an example on its term page: a healthy 30-year-old non-smoker (assigned female at birth) may pay about $8.10 a month for $100,000 of 10-year coverage, a rate it dated May 26, 2025. Your price depends on your age, health and amount.

How to choose a coverage amount

Add up what your beneficiaries would have to pay: the mortgage, other debts, years of income, childcare, education and final expenses. Subtract savings and the coverage you already have, such as group life at work.

Then match the term to the years of greatest need. For example, suppose your mortgage has 22 years left and your youngest child is 3. A 25-year term covers both. The life insurance needs calculator does the arithmetic.

Features to compare on any policy

  • Guaranteed or adjustable premiums
  • Coverage period and renewal terms
  • Conversion rights and their deadlines
  • Exclusions and the two-year contestability period
  • Riders and what they cost
  • Beneficiary designation and ownership

Sun Life insurance: frequently asked questions

Is this the official Sun Life website?

No. This is an independent guide written by Pankaj Bhatia of Insure In Canada Inc., based on Sun Life's published product information.

For a Sun Life policy, contact Sun Life or a Sun Life advisor. Pankaj does not sell Sun Life; he can price comparable plans from the insurers he represents so you can compare.

What term lengths does Sun Life offer?

Sun Life Evolve Term comes in any length from 5 to 40 years. Sun Life Go Term comes in 10 or 20 years, and Go Simplified Term in 10 years only.

Evolve term covers $50,000 to $25,000,000. The maximum issue age is 85 minus the term length, so a 30-year term is available to age 55.

Can I convert Sun Life term insurance to permanent coverage?

Evolve Term is guaranteed convertible until the policy anniversary nearest age 75, without new medical evidence.

It can also be converted to a longer term (at least 10 years longer) before the 7th policy anniversary. Conversion is available only on select Sun Life term plans, so check yours.

When does Sun Life term coverage end?

At age 85. Sun Life term policies renew automatically until 85, then coverage ends and no death benefit is paid after that.

If you may need coverage past 85, look at converting to permanent insurance before the deadline, or at Term 100 or whole life.

Can I buy Sun Life life insurance online?

Yes, through Sun Life Go. Go Term offers $100,000 to $1 million for 10 or 20 years, and Go Simplified offers $50,000, $75,000 or $100,000 with three health questions.

Larger amounts and Evolve term go through an advisor.

Does Sun Life have life insurance with no health questions?

Yes. Sun Life Go Guaranteed is for Canadian residents aged 30 to 74, for $5,000 to $25,000, with no health questions.

If death is not accidental in the first two years, Sun Life refunds the premiums paid, minus fees, instead of paying the benefit. Payments stop at age 95 and coverage continues for life.

What dividend scale does Sun Life pay on participating whole life?

Sun Life kept its dividend scale interest rate at 6.25% for 2026-2027, effective April 1, 2026.

Dividends are not guaranteed. Sun Par Accelerator closed to new sales on February 9, 2026; Sun Par Accumulator II remains available.

What does Sun Life critical illness insurance cover?

Sun Critical Illness Insurance pays a lump sum for 26 critical illnesses, plus a partial payout of 15% (up to $50,000) for 5 less severe conditions.

Adults aged 18 to 65 can apply for $25,000 to $3,000,000, on Term 10, Term 75 or Term 100 plans, with return-of-premium options.

How does Sun Life compare with other insurers?

Sun Life's range is wide, but no insurer is cheapest for everyone. Price and underwriting differ by age, health and amount.

Pankaj compares similar coverage from iA Financial Group, Empire Life, Foresters, Co-operators, Wawanesa, BMO Insurance, Equitable Life and Assumption Life, using the same amount, term and health assumptions.
