SSQ travel insurance is now Beneva: what it covers and how to claim

If your work or retiree plan says SSQ, your travel cover is with Beneva. Here's what that means, how to claim, and how to fill the gaps.

The short answer

SSQ Insurance no longer exists under that name. It merged with La Capitale in 2020, and on January 1, 2023 the insurer became Beneva. SSQ travel policies continue as Beneva policies, and older cards that say SSQ remain valid while the plan is in force. Today Beneva's travel insurance comes mainly through employer, retiree and association group plans; its public site doesn't offer a travel or visitor plan you can buy on your own. Group plans usually cover emergency medical care for a set number of days per trip. Many leave out trip cancellation, baggage and longer trips, and they never cover visiting parents. Call the number on your card before treatment, and buy a top-up if your trip is longer than your plan allows.

From SSQ to Beneva: what changed and what didn't

The name changed; your coverage did not. Here is the timeline.

  1. 1944
    SSQ founded

SSQ starts in Quebec City as a mutual health insurer.

  2. Jan 2020
    Merger announced

La Capitale and SSQ Insurance announce they will combine.

  3. Jul 1, 2020
    Merger closes

The two mutuals combine. SSQ and La Capitale brands keep operating during the transition.

  4. Dec 3, 2020
    Beneva name revealed

The new brand is announced; it gradually replaces SSQ and La Capitale.

  5. Jan 1, 2023
    SSQ becomes Beneva

Beneva officially becomes the insurer. Policies continue; read "SSQ" as "Beneva" in your contract.

  6. 2026
    Today

Beneva is a Quebec City-based mutual with about 3.5 million members and clients. Its travel cover is offered mainly through group and retiree plans.

What this means for you

  • Same coverage. The merger didn't change the terms of existing policies.
  • Old SSQ documents still apply. Booklets, forms and travel cards were updated over time. Where they say SSQ, read Beneva.
  • Check your plan is still with Beneva. Some employers and universities have since moved travel cover to other insurers. Ask HR before a long trip.
  • Use the number on your card. Your group's assistance provider (for example CanAssistance or AXA Assistance) is printed there.
  • Beneva also sells home, auto and life insurance, inherited from La Capitale and SSQ. This page covers travel only.

What Beneva (SSQ) group travel insurance usually covers

Each group contract is different; your benefits booklet has the exact limits. These are the common building blocks.

Emergency medical care

Hospital, doctors, ambulance, emergency dental and medical evacuation after a sudden illness or injury outside your province. Plans often set a high limit per incident, such as $2,000,000.

Usually included

24/7 travel assistance

A multilingual team that confirms coverage, finds a hospital, pays providers directly where possible and arranges transport home.

Usually included

A days-per-trip limit

Each trip is covered up to a maximum number of consecutive days, for example 60 or 180. Days past the limit are not covered.

Check your limit

Trip cancellation & interruption

Some plans include it, often with a maximum per trip. Many group and retiree plans don't include it at all.

Sometimes

Baggage

Beneva's group FAQ says lost or damaged baggage isn't covered by its group insurance. Your airline or credit card may help.

Usually not

Visiting family

Group plans cover you and enrolled dependants travelling outside your province. Parents visiting you in Canada need their own visitor policy.

Not covered

How to use your coverage and make a claim

Most claim problems start with a missed phone call or a missing receipt.

Before you go

  1. Confirm your plan. Ask HR or your retiree plan administrator that travel cover is active, the insurer, and the maximum days per trip.
  2. Carry your travel card. Paper or in the Beneva app, with the 24/7 number and your policy and certificate numbers.
  3. Call if your health changed. A new diagnosis or medication change before departure? Ask the assistance service whether it's covered.
  4. Check advisories. Look up the Government of Canada travel advice and health notice for each destination.
  5. Fill the gaps. Buy a top-up for extra days and cancellation cover if your plan has none.

If something happens

  1. Call assistance first. Use the number on your card before you get treatment, or have a family member call from the hospital as soon as possible.
  2. Follow their directions. They may send you to a network hospital and pay it directly.
  3. Keep every document. Itemized invoices that show diagnosis and treatment, receipts, proof of payment and medical reports.
  4. Submit the claim. Complete the claim form for your province and upload your documents through the assistance provider's portal (for many Beneva plans, CanAssistance).
  5. Don't bill your province first. The assistance company coordinates with your provincial health plan.

Numbers to keep: the 24/7 number printed on your travel card (it depends on your group). Beneva's travel FAQ lists 1 855 635-9460 for its travel insurance assistance service. For trip cancellation claims, also keep your booking invoice, e-tickets and a letter explaining what happened.

When you need more than your group plan

Pankaj can quote these with other Canadian insurers. You keep your Beneva plan; the extra policy fills the gap.

A long winter away

Your plan covers 60 days but you'll be in Florida for 120. Buy a top-up for the extra 60 days. It starts when your group cover ends, and it is usually much cheaper than a full plan.

An expensive trip

Cruise, tour or flights you can't get back? If your plan has no trip cancellation and interruption cover, buy it within days of booking for the full non-refundable cost.

Leaving your job or retiring

Group travel cover usually ends with your employment. A retiree plan may continue it with an age limit. Otherwise buy an annual multi-trip or single-trip plan.

Parents visiting you

Your plan doesn't cover them. They need visitor insurance, or Super Visa insurance with $100,000+ for a year from entry.

Insurance for visiting parents: buy online

Beneva has no visitor plan, so these are the insurers Pankaj works with for visitors and Super Visa. Buy online opens the insurer's secure site; Plan details opens our review. For your own trip, use the travel quote form or WhatsApp Pankaj.

Policies are issued by each insurer. Availability depends on age, health and plan.

SSQ and Beneva travel insurance: frequently asked questions

Does SSQ travel insurance still exist?

Not under that name. SSQ Insurance merged with La Capitale in 2020, and since January 1, 2023 the insurer has been Beneva. SSQ travel policies became Beneva policies.

Existing coverage did not change because of the merger. Some employers' booklets, claim forms and travel cards still show the SSQ name; for those, read "SSQ" as "Beneva".

My travel card still says SSQ. Is it valid?

Yes, if your plan is still in force. The SSQ name was replaced by Beneva, but cards and booklets were updated gradually, so older ones may still show SSQ.

The emergency number on the card is the one to call. If you are unsure whether your employer or retiree plan is still with Beneva, ask your HR or benefits administrator before you leave; some groups have moved to other insurers.

Can I buy Beneva or SSQ travel insurance on my own?

Beneva's public website currently lists travel insurance only under group plans and retiree products, with no plan you can buy on your own online.

Most people with Beneva travel cover have it through an employer, a retiree plan or an association. If you need individual coverage, such as a top-up for a long trip, trip cancellation or visitor insurance for parents, Pankaj can compare other Canadian insurers for you.

Does Beneva offer visitor or Super Visa insurance?

Beneva does not show a Visitors to Canada or Super Visa plan on its public website. Your group plan does not cover visiting parents or relatives either.

For visiting family use a Visitors to Canada policy from an insurer that offers one. A Super Visa needs at least $100,000 of emergency medical cover for one year from entry. Compare Super Visa insurance.

What should I do in a medical emergency abroad with Beneva coverage?

Call the 24/7 assistance number on your travel card before getting treatment, or have someone call for you as soon as possible after admission.

The assistance company confirms your coverage, directs you to a suitable hospital and can arrange payment. Depending on your plan, that provider may be CanAssistance or AXA Assistance; the card tells you which. Beneva's FAQ lists 1 855 635-9460 for its travel insurance assistance service.

How do I submit a Beneva travel claim?

Medical and trip cancellation claims for Beneva insureds are handled by its assistance provider. With CanAssistance you fill in the claim form and upload documents through its secure portal.

Include itemized original invoices that show the diagnosis and treatment, proof of payment, and medical reports. For cancellation, also send a letter explaining what happened, the original travel invoice, e-tickets, proof of payment and a physician's statement or other proof. Your provincial plan does not need to be billed first; the assistance company coordinates it.

Do I have to tell Beneva about my health before I travel?

Not if your health is good and stable. If you have a new diagnosis, a medication change or a condition under investigation, call the travel assistance service before you leave.

Group travel plans have a pre-existing condition clause. A condition that changed shortly before departure may not be covered, so check before booking a long trip.

Am I covered if there is a travel advisory for my destination?

Beneva's FAQ says that if the government's travel health notice rises to Level 3 after you buy, you can cancel. If it rises to Level 4 and you still travel, you lose travel assistance coverage.

Check the Government of Canada travel advice for your destination before you book and again before you leave. Rules can differ by policy, so check yours.

Does Beneva group travel insurance cover lost baggage?

Usually not. Beneva's group travel FAQ says lost or damaged baggage is not covered by its group insurance and points travellers to their airline.

If baggage matters to you, check your credit card coverage or buy an individual travel plan that includes baggage.

What if my trip is longer than my group plan allows?

Buy a top-up policy for the days beyond your plan's maximum before you leave. Group plans often limit each trip to 30, 60, 90 or 180 days.

If you stay past the maximum without a top-up, you are uninsured for the extra days. Use the coverage gap checker to work out how many days you need, then get a quote.
