Who is eligible?

  • Visitor to Canada, eligible work- or study-permit holder, Canadian or immigrant not eligible for government health insurance
  • At least 15 days old and less than 90 years old
  • Not travelling against physician advice
  • No terminal illness
  • No new or undiagnosed symptoms or known reason to seek medical attention
  • No assistance required with activities of daily living
  • No listed recent serious cancer, dialysis, transplant or home-oxygen disqualification

Pre-existing conditions and medical history

  • Plan 1 does not cover pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Plan 2 may cover eligible stable pre-existing conditions.
  • Up to age 69, the required stability period is generally 90 days.
  • Age 70–84 requires 180 days of stability and completion of the medical declaration.
  • Pre-existing-condition coverage is not available over age 84.
Medical-history reminder: A new symptom, diagnosis, medication change, treatment change, hospitalization, referral or pending investigation can affect eligibility or stability.

Medical questionnaire and application guidance

Who must complete it?

An applicant age 70–84 seeking coverage for stable pre-existing conditions must complete the Secure Travel medical declaration.

What does it ask?

Questions address older heart procedures, heart disease with diabetes or hypertension, transplants, congestive heart failure, lung conditions requiring oral steroids or oxygen, kidney or liver failure, vascular disease and recent heart, lung, neurological, gastrointestinal or cancer history.

What happens after a Yes answer?

Eligibility for pre-existing-condition coverage may be affected. The complete declaration and policy wording govern.

Waiting period and stability guidance

  • A 48-hour sickness waiting period applies when purchased within 30 days after arrival in Canada.
  • An eight-day sickness waiting period applies when purchased more than 30 days after arrival.
  • The waiting period may be waived for qualifying continuous Secure Travel coverage without a gap or prohibited increase in coverage.

Claims and emergency assistance

  • Contact MSH Assistance before treatment whenever reasonably possible.
  • Submit a completed claim form.
  • Provide original itemized bills, prescription receipts and proof of travel.
  • Submit written proof within 90 days of service.
Important: The policy may limit benefits when MSH Assistance is not contacted before treatment.

Refunds and administration fees

  • A full refund may be available before the effective date, less applicable administration fees.
  • A Super Visa denial refund requires satisfactory proof.
  • A prorated refund may be considered after early return or government-health-plan eligibility.
  • Written requests and proof are generally required within 60 days.

  • Unstable or otherwise excluded pre-existing conditions
  • Non-emergency, elective or cosmetic treatment
  • Treatment in the country of origin
  • Ongoing or chronic care after the emergency ends
  • Specified hazardous activities and professional sports
  • Specified pregnancy and childbirth expenses
  • Alcohol, drug, illegal-act, war and nuclear-event losses
