It is travel insurance for Canadian residents who are leaving their home province or territory. Depending on the plan, it can help pay eligible emergency medical expenses and may also cover trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage problems and travel accidents. The appropriate plan depends on the number and length of your trips, your age, your health history and the non-medical benefits you need.
Choose by travel pattern
The cards below are a practical starting point. Your confirmation and policy wording determine the actual coverage.
Emergency medical protection for one trip of a specified duration.
Annual coverage for multiple trips, subject to the selected maximum duration for each trip outside Canada.
Designed for travellers whose pre-existing medical conditions need to be reviewed through medical underwriting.
Combine emergency medical coverage with selected non-medical benefits.
Add days to eligible coverage from a credit card, employer, Manulife annual plan or another insurer. A request may be possible after departure when made before the existing coverage expires.
Selected all-inclusive or deluxe choices may be available for eligible younger travellers.

Emergency medical benefits
Eligible expenses may include the following, up to the limits and conditions in the specific policy.
Eligible emergency hospital accommodation, physician services, surgery and medically necessary care.
Ground or air transportation when medically necessary and approved under the policy.
Eligible prescription drugs required for the covered emergency, subject to duration and benefit limits.
Emergency-related laboratory tests, X-rays and other approved diagnostic services.
Relief-of-pain treatment and accidental dental benefits, subject to separate maximums.
Selected services from registered professionals such as chiropractors or physiotherapists, within policy limits.
Approved transportation home when medically necessary or more appropriate than continued treatment abroad.
Eligible travel costs to bring a family member or other person to your bedside after a qualifying hospitalization.
Additional hotel, meal and transportation costs when a covered medical emergency delays your return.
Selected benefits may help return a travel companion, dependent children, a pet or baggage.
Health history and eligibility
Medical accuracy is one of the most important parts of buying travel insurance. Never guess, minimize a condition or answer based only on a medication name.
Prepare diagnoses, medications, dosages, recent changes, tests, referrals, hospital visits and specialist care.
Read the date range and medical wording carefully. The meaning of “treated,” “investigated” and “change” matters.
Save the completed application, confirmation, policy, questionnaire and any advisor notes before departure.
Know before you travel
The policy contains detailed exclusions and limitations. The examples below are not the complete list.
Claims related to a condition that does not meet the applicable stability requirement may be excluded.
Routine, experimental, elective, cosmetic, chronic or rehabilitation care is generally outside emergency travel coverage.
Travel for the purpose of receiving treatment, or care that could reasonably be expected before departure, may not be covered.
Professional or paid sports and selected extreme or hazardous activities may be excluded or limited.
Losses linked to excessive alcohol, non-prescribed drugs, self-harm or criminal activity can be excluded.
Routine pregnancy care, delivery near the expected due date and a child born during the trip can be excluded or limited.
Emergency and claims guidance
Contact the Assistance Centre immediately or as soon as medically possible. Keep your policy number, passport and provincial health card available.
Before treatment when possible: Call for coverage confirmation, provider referral, treatment coordination and pre-approval. Direct billing may be arranged where available.
Always verify: Use the telephone numbers shown on your current confirmation, wallet card or policy because contact information may change.
Top-up coverage after departure
You may be able to request an extension or top-up while you are already travelling, but it is not automatic. The request must be made before your existing coverage expires, and Manulife's approval conditions must be satisfied.
Contact the agent or broker who arranged your coverage before the current policy or trip-duration limit ends. The reviewed policy says an extension may be available when all applicable requirements are met.
Confirm the date your present policy or selected multi-trip duration ends.
Call the agent or broker who sold the coverage before the current protection expires.
Health questions, trip details, approval and additional premium may be required.
Keep the written confirmation and make sure the dates cover the entire remaining trip.
You planned to return before your existing coverage ended, but now need ten additional days. Contact your agent before the existing expiry date. When the request meets the policy conditions and is approved, the additional coverage can be issued for the eligible extra days. Coverage is not guaranteed until the insurer approves the request, receives the required premium and issues confirmation.

Depending on the plan, it may cover eligible emergency hospital and medical care, ambulance services, prescription drugs, diagnostic tests, emergency dental care and medical transportation. All-inclusive plans may also cover cancellation, interruption, baggage and travel accidents.
Many standard Manulife plans for travelling Canadians provide up to $10 million in combined eligible emergency medical benefits. The policy maximum is not a guarantee that every expense is covered.
General requirements include living in Canada, being at least 30 days old, maintaining provincial or territorial government health insurance for the full trip and meeting the plan's eligibility requirements.
The standard comparison materials state that a questionnaire is generally not required when applying under age 60. It may be required at age 60 or older. TravelEase requires medical underwriting and a questionnaire.
Some standard plans may cover claims related to pre-existing conditions that meet the applicable stability period. The reviewed wording uses 3-month or 6-month stability periods depending on age and rate category.
Stable is a defined term. It generally requires no specified change in symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, medication or medical investigation during the applicable period. Read the exact definition in the policy issued to you.
TravelEase is designed for travellers whose disclosed medical conditions need to be reviewed through medical underwriting. Coverage is subject to approval and the terms offered after the review.
Single-trip coverage is designed for one trip. Multi-trip coverage is often more convenient for several trips during one year, as long as each trip fits the selected maximum duration.
The reviewed Multi-Trip Emergency Medical plan offers maximum trip-duration options of 4, 10, 18, 30 or 60 days for travel outside Canada. Covered travel within Canada does not use those selected trip-duration limits.
You may be able to request a top-up or extension while already travelling. Contact the agent or broker who sold the coverage before the current policy expires. Approval, additional premium, health requirements and the absence of a claim-related event or health change may apply.
Check the current expiry date, contact your agent before that date, provide the requested trip and health information, pay the additional premium when approved and obtain written confirmation showing continuous coverage with no gap.
The reviewed policy excludes a medical condition that first appeared, was diagnosed or was treated after the scheduled departure date and before the extension or top-up becomes effective. Other policy exclusions, limits and stability requirements also continue to apply.
A top-up may add days when a trip is longer than the selected annual-plan duration. Arrange it before the current coverage expires and confirm that the full trip is insured without a gap.
Possibly. Manulife offers emergency medical top-up coverage for eligible existing plans. Review the credit card certificate first because age limits, trip limits and coverage terms can differ.
Selected plans cover travel outside your home province or territory. Manulife advertises reduced premiums on certain emergency medical plans when an entire trip is within Canada.
Family coverage may be available when the policy's age, relationship and eligibility conditions are met. The reviewed Multi-Trip Emergency Medical wording requires family members to be under age 60 and named on the confirmation.
Common exclusions include unstable pre-existing conditions, non-emergency or elective treatment, expected care, selected high-risk activities, losses linked to alcohol or illegal drugs, and certain pregnancy-related expenses. The complete policy controls.
The reviewed policy lists 1-888-881-8010 from Canada or the United States and +1-519-945-8346 collect where available. Verify the numbers on the current policy before departure.
The reviewed policy states that 20% co-insurance may apply to eligible expenses the insurer would normally pay, unless it was medically impossible to call. Contact the Assistance Centre as soon as possible.
The Assistance Centre may arrange direct billing where possible. It can also refer you to providers, monitor the emergency and coordinate medically necessary transportation.
The reviewed policy provides 10 days to examine the coverage and request a refund when the insured has not departed and no claim is in progress. Verify the rule for the exact plan purchased.
Refund provisions differ by plan. Certain single-trip plans may allow a partial refund when there is no claim and other policy conditions are met. Ask for the exact calculation before cancelling.
