Side-Trips Benefit:

With GMS insurance policy for Visitors & Immigrants to Canada, you can enjoy the coverage almost anywhere in the world. Side-Trips benefit is designed to provide you with a convenience of using the same insurance plan while travelling outside Canada with some additional benefits such as Air Ambulance, Special Attendant and Escort of Insured Dependant.

In order to be eligible for the Side-trips Benefit:
a) Your trip has to start and end in Canada.
b) You MUST physically remain in Canada for more than 50% of your coverage period with GMS insurance.
c) Coverage includes the Side-Trips to other countries that are up to 30 consecutive days in duration.
d) The trip is NOT to your country of origin / permanent residence.

You are NOT eligible to purchase GMS plans for Visitors to Canada, if:

– You are 80 years old or older at the time of application.
– You are eligible for and/or covered by any Provincial Healthcare Plan in Canada.
– You have a reason to seek medical attention at the moment you apply for coverage.
– You are applying for coverage from within Canada and had a medical treatment in excess of $5,000 during the last 12 months prior to applying for GMS insurance.
– You have been refused an insurance coverage from a similar insurance provider to GMS.

If you are 55 years old or older, you must meet other certain conditions that are outlined in Policy Wording for GMS.

Please note that all GMS Visitors to Canada plans automatically include coverage for Pre-existing Medical Conditions that have been stable for at least 6 months or 12 months before the effective date, depending on a type of condition. Please, note that certain limitations apply.

Limitations and Eligibility Requirements:

You must meet certain conditions that set out in Eligibility section in order to be eligible for an insurance policy offered by GMS. Moreover, your medical coverage is a subject to various exclusions and limitations, which are outlined in the Exclusions section of the GMS | Policy Wording.

Waiting Period:

There is no waiting period if you apply for GMS medical coverage prior to your arrival in Canada or it is an interrupted continuation of medical coverage issued by GMS or similar insurance provider.
> 1) If you apply for GMS medical insurance coverage within 30 days of your arrival in Canada, there is a 2 day (48 hours) waiting period following the Effective Date.
– a) An emergency is a result of a physical injury.
– b) You have an active insurance plan with similar coverage issued by a licensed Canadian insurance provider.

2) If you apply for GMS coverage having been in Canada for more than 30 days, the waiting period is 7 days (168 hours) for all emergencies from the Effective Date.
– a) An emergency is a result of a physical injury.
– b) You have an existing plan with GMS or other insurance provider licensed to operate in Canada.

Premium Refunds:

Note that NO refunds are issued if there were any claims initiated, pending or paid for during the period of coverage with GMS or if you request a refund after the expiry date of your policy. Certain exclusions apply.

You are eligible to receive a Full Refund in case:

1) You cancel your policy within the first 10 days from the date of purchase prior to the Effective Date of your insurance policy.
2) Your travel visa application has been refused (including Super Visa). A satisfactory proof of Visa Refusal is required.
– A) Before the effective date set on your GMS medical insurance policy. No fee.
– B) Past the effective date, if GMS is notified once the policy start date has commenced. There will be an administration fee of $40.

Request a Partial Refund, which may require you to pay an administration fee of $40, when:

– a) You send a request for a Partial Refund after your policy becomes effective in case no travel to Canada has taken place. The refund will be calculated from the date that GMS was notified.
– b) Early Departure – return to your country of origin before the expiry date on your GMS insurance policy. Such refund will be calculated starting from the date you left Canada.
– c) You become eligible for a Provincial Healthcare Plan, while your GMS insurance policy is still in effect. The refund will be calculated starting from the day GMS was notified and not the effective date of your provincial insurance plan.
– d) Death occurs while the insurance coverage is ongoing. The refund will be calculated from the date of death.

Making a Claim with GMS:

In the event of a medical emergency, you or someone on your behalf must contact GMS with 24 hours of treatment occurrence or hospital admission. Failure to notify GMS Emergency Assistance Center within the first 24 hours in the event of treatment or hospitalization will limit insurance benefits otherwise payable to 70% of eligible expenses up to the sum insured or $50,000.

In order to proceed with a claim, after you have notified GMS of a medical emergency, you need to do the following:

– Fill out a Claim Form, medical records including a complete diagnosis from the attending physician and attach all original medical receipts for treatment and prescription medication.
– Send the form with your receipts to the address provided by GMS Emergency Assistant at the time of your call.

Limitation Period:

a) A written notice of claim must be sent to GMS within 30 days after contacting the provider.
b) A Proof of a Claim must be sent to GMS as soon as possible and no later than 90 days after the sickness or injury has occurred.
c) Any eligible expenses have to be submitted to GMS within 12 months from the date of the last eligible expense.
